Visiting the Children's Learning Lab is fun and easy. Many parents find that watching their children participate in these types of studies is very interesting and a valuable learning experience for both themselves and their children.
A typical lab visit is approximately 30 minutes from start to finish.
We will provide you with a parking space on campus and an undergraduate or graduate research assistant will greet you by your car and bring to the lab.
Once you arrive at the lab, you will meet the lead researcher and fill out some consent forms. Your child will get to know the research assistants and will be given some time to play and get comfortable with the lab space.
Then you and your child will be taken to one of our study rooms. Sometimes, your child will be seated at a table and will play with toys presented by the lead researcher. Other times, your baby will watch some brief videos in which objects or people using objects are shown.
When the study is over, a member of our staff will show you back out to your car.
We use a variety of your children's behavior to understand how they are thinking about the world. For example, they way they play with hard objects and soft objects can tell us how they understand object surfaces. The different ways they look at objects in a scene can tell us what they expect people to do with the objects, or even how babies organize those objects into groups. |
