Research Description

My research examines the role of experience in shaping developmental changes in social cognition. To study this, I examine developmental changes in the ability to process socially relevant information from human faces, such as identity, race, and age. Our abilities to quickly and accurately process such information is largely influenced by our specific experiences with individuals from different racial, age, and gender groups. My research examines cognitive, perceptual/experiential, and neural mechanisms underlying the development of face perception and expertise. I use a variety of techniques in my studies, including eye-tracking, ERP/EEG, and fMRI. My current research projects are examining developmental changes in brain networks involved in social cognition and the role of experience in shaping racial biases. My research program has important implications for the atypical development of social cognition (e.g., autism spectrum disorder) and the development of racial preferences.
