Most class meetings will be divided into two sections. Half of the class will be devoted to hearing the research presentation of one of the Department of Psychology’s faculty members. The primary purpose of these presentations is to expose students to some of the research that faculty members are doing. This will also acquaint students who are planning to do an Honors Thesis with the faculty and permit them to select a faculty member to supervise their project. The second half of each class will be devoted to the discussion of a contemporary and controversial book: E. O. Wilson’s Consilience: The unity of knowledge (Knopf, 1998). Each student will have the opportunity to lead class discussion at least once.

Students will also write a 10-15 page paper, reviewing some topic in psychology of their interest. The topic must be approved by the instructor. For students planning on doing an Honors Thesis the following semester, this paper can serve as an introduction to that project.
